Lake Louise: Snow pack may foul RV camping plans

Gordon Lightfoot sang, "It's great to be Alberta-bound," but a big "IF" could be added to his travel plans: The unusual winter left a big snow pack in the Canadian Rockies. For folks planning visits to many popular camping spots in the province the snow pack may have left them "frozen out" of their favorite haunts.

Parks Canada says some popular spots will decidedly have a 'gates closed' policy on the long weekend of May 21 to 23. They include: Two Jack Lakeside, Two Jack Main Campground, Lake Louise Tent Campground and the Kootenay National Park Redstreak Campground. Others too, may still be iced over, and RVers and other potential users do well to call ahead for more information.

The Calgary Herald quotes Parks Canada spokesman Omar McDadi, "We had an amazing winter in the Canadian Rockies and through the mountain parks. It was the kind of winter we were waiting for. There was so much snow and so many things to do," he said. "The consequences of the great winter are that it allowed for an incredibly big snowpack, which remains in places in the mountain parks. Couple that with the cold spring we've had throughout much of the year and some of the avalanches we've had earlier this year that have, in some cases, caused damage in campgrounds."
